The rigid blade is not affected by frame tension. It is flat, stiff and fast cutting, even when hand held. The rigid blade is usually the best choice for quickly roughing out a shape or removing large amounts of material.

The flexible blade is best for smoothing convex surfaces and rounding sharp edges. If it is stretched tight in a hacksaw frame, it is flat and fast cutting. If the frame tension is decreased, the blade will bend slightly around a convex surface for a smooth blended cutting action.

The half round blade is the best tool for smoothing and shaping large inside curves. It also works remarkably well as a general purpose blade. The half round blade is nearly as stiff and fast cutting as the rigid blade.
